I was encouraged to start this blog in order to show off my personality and interests. As someone who’s spent most of her life writing about the arts, I thought it might be fun to expand my repertoire to include a more recent passion: history. I’m not sure when history by itself really grabbed me, as it was always a part of my work. It’s an essential part of understanding and interpreting various artistic movements, be it the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, film noir, or whatever the hell autofiction is. (Isn’t it just memoir?) Over the past few years, my interest in exploring world history has grown significantly. While I can’t pretend to be an authority—this really is just a hobby to me—it’ll be a fun challenge to pick up various personages, empires, conflicts, peoples, institutions, cultural touchstones, places, or objects and go beyond a Wikipedia-level understanding of them. It’s also probably a good exercise to write in a way that I feel less pressure to “perform” as a writer—writing never gets any easier for me. I’m extremely hard on myself, as most writers are, and I often struggle with my need for the things I make to be “perfect,” which more often than not means they don’t get made at all. My hope is that this more casual output can keep the creative juices flowing and make writing a more regular part of my routine.
I say this, but I had almost eight pages of notes for my first entry. Maybe it’ll get better. Above all else, I hope you enjoy it. Subscribe and find out!
